The
island of Tiengemeten is only 20 kilometres south of Rotterdam.
It is the last remaining island in the south-western delta area
of the Netherlands. Once it was a sandbank on which reeds and
brushwood grew. Once 700 hectares of fertile agricultural ground
with six farms.
In the 1990s, a decision was made to let Tiengemeten return to
nature.
There would be no room for farmers anymore.
TIENGEMETEN
2001 - 2006 shows how the landscape changes slowly but surely.
The field make way for derelict land. The old barns that have
lost their purpose start to decay.
A detailed plan for nature development is ready, but has not been
put into practice. Through long time there is uncertainty about
the financial situation. One farmer is left on the island with a
lease that has not yet run out. As long as he is there, no start
can be made with the work. At last he moves. Work starts.
